Los Glaciares National Park is in the Austral Andes of southwest Argentina, near the Chilean border. Its many glaciers include Perito Moreno, best known for the dramatic icefalls from its front wall, into Lake Argentino. In the north, Mount Fitz Roy’s jagged peak rises above the mountain town of El Chaltén and Lake Viedma. The park is home to many birds, such as condors and black-chested buzzard eagles

Temperatures in the park range from 0.6C in winter to 13.4C in summer. At higher altitudes, the mean annual temperature can be a bitter -3C.
To visit, fly to Buenos Aires and catch a bus from Route 40. Entrance costs around £16 with trips to see the glaciers around £21.
The park itself can be divided into two parts, one for each of the two large lakes that are partially contained within Los Glaciares – Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma.
Although the park was opened only 80 years ago, its stunning natural features have existed for Millenia.
In 1981, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its “exceptional natural beauty, with rugged, towering mountains and numerous glacial lakes”.
